Death in a Nutshell - Burning at the Stake

Mia Lyttle Twysted

You're out on Halloween Night when you see the hag whose very existence you'd like to curse. By luck or irony, they're sporting the costume of a witch. And you? Well, tonight, you happen to be a witch hunter. The time for a good old-fashioned witch-burning is in order. Alright, fine, we'll call it a "bond fire."

BURN THY FLESH First and foremost, you must build your mound when preparing to burn a witch at the stake. The dimensions will vary depending on how many you are looking to torch. You'll either go with a large fire or a small fire. A large fire is more equipt to deal with the masses. You have many people you need to set a flame, build big. This bigger flame could mean that people are more likely to die of asphyxiation due to the large amounts of smoke. A low fire is the opposite. Meant for one, maybe two if you've got a pair that needs to go. The lower heat from a smaller fire could mean your unwilling volunteer might succumb to heat stroke or excessive fluid loss as it all evaporates from the body due to the massive heat. Though the human body can burn for hours after the skin is burnt through, the body feels no more pain. A good show is only suitable for so long. In the depths of history, they fixed this issue by occasionally attacking some gunpower to the one about to go out in a literal blaze of glory. When the fire reached the gunpowder: BOOM! Add some fireworks, and you've got a show. Some people would pay money to see such a show. Sure, they're probably sick and demented, but aren't we all in some way?

WE'D ALL BURN Burning souls at stake is widely known due to the Salam Witch Trials. However, others burned for acts that those in power felt were heresy or blasphemous. In other words, because they pissed someone off. That was the case with Sarah Good, one of the women first burned for witchcraft. She was considered an outcast, didn't attend church, couldn't quote scripture, and was known for cursing those she felt wronged her.

There isn't enough wood on the planet to burn people by that criteria nowadays. Population levels would take a hit, and many family members, including myself, would be going down in flames.

MODERN-DAY SOLUTION It's hard to see the world through the perspective of someone else. Your conflicting natures often alienate you to the point of rage. These feelings grow inside you without an outlet until they burst out in a white haze of delirium that can change your life. Like I said, I don't look good in orange. DO NOT BURN PEOPLE ALIVE. However, in this digital age, you could make a realistic video that helps satisfy some of those dark urges. Keep it in your private collection for rainy days when you need a little pick-me-up.
